Premier League Explains Why Liverpool Were Denied a Penalty for Amad Handball vs. Manchester United
The Premier League has issued an official clarification on why Liverpool were not awarded a penalty following a controversial handball incident involving Amad Diallo during their 2β1 defeat to Manchester United at Anfield.
The flashpoint came midway through the first half when Cody Gakpoβs cross appeared to strike Amadβs arm inside the box. Liverpool players immediately appealed for a penalty, but referee Michael Oliver waved play on.
After a VAR review, the on-field decision stood. Officials ruled that although the ball did make contact with Amadβs arm, his positioning was βnatural and justifiableβ, meaning no infringement occurred.
In an in-match statement, the Premier League confirmed:
βThe refereeβs decision of no penalty was reviewed and upheld by VAR. It was determined that Amadβs arm was in a natural and justifiable position.β
The incident added to Liverpoolβs frustrations during a heated first half, which also saw Bryan Mbeumo give United the lead within 61 seconds. Despite Gakpoβs equalizer later on, a late Harry Maguire header sealed a dramatic 2β1 win for the visitors.
