Arne Slot branded “insufferable” and “rattled” after post-match remarks following Liverpool’s defeat to Manchester United
Liverpool boss Arne Slot came under heavy criticism after his post-match comments in the wake of Liverpool’s 2–1 loss to Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday — a result that deepened the Premier League champions’ current crisis.
The defeat marked Liverpool’s fourth consecutive loss in all competitions, with Harry Maguire heading home the decisive goal late in the game. Bryan Mbeumo had given United an early lead just two minutes in — while Alexis Mac Allister was down injured — before Cody Gakpo levelled for the hosts. Maguire’s 84th-minute winner sealed United’s first victory at Anfield since 2016, easing the mounting pressure on manager Ruben Amorim.
For Slot, however, the result has intensified scrutiny. The Dutch coach is enduring his most difficult period since taking charge, with the Reds still winless since their Carabao Cup triumph over Southampton.
Following the loss, Slot’s post-match interview with Sky Sports drew widespread backlash after he appeared to suggest United had relied on long balls and deep defending rather than taking accountability for Liverpool’s performance.
“It’s always hard to face a team that defends with a low block and mainly plays long balls,” Slot said. “It becomes even more difficult when you go 1–0 down within a minute, especially when one of your players is on the ground.
If you told me before the game that against a team like that we’d create so many chances, I wouldn’t have expected us to lose. People forget how many opportunities we had in the first half when we were behind.”
His comments quickly sparked anger online, with many fans accusing him of making excuses instead of acknowledging Liverpool’s shortcomings.
Reactions on social media were scathing:
- “The guy is insufferable,” one supporter wrote on X.
- Another added, “Rattled. Love it.”
- A third commented, “Always making excuses and showing zero accountability.”
- “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Slot interview where he isn’t complaining about something,” said another.
- One fan summed up the sentiment bluntly: “Such a sore loser.”
Liverpool will look to halt their slide in midweek as they travel to face Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League, before a crucial Premier League trip to Brentford on Saturday evening.
