Mohamed Salah angered Florian Wirtz in a telling moment during Liverpool’s big win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League.
Liverpool ended their four-game losing streak in emphatic fashion, coming from behind to beat Eintracht Frankfurt 5–1 in their Champions League clash on Wednesday night.
The evening began in the worst possible way for the Premier League champions, as Frankfurt struck first through Rasmus Kristensen. But Arne Slot’s side quickly regrouped and produced a dominant response, firing in five unanswered goals to seal a convincing victory.
Former Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike sparked the turnaround in the 35th minute with a poacher’s finish against his old club. Moments later, Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté both rose highest from corners to make it 3–1 before halftime, putting Liverpool firmly in control.
After the break, the Reds kept the momentum rolling. Cody Gakpo added a fourth, and Dominik Szoboszlai capped off the rout with a fifth goal to complete the scoring.
Mohamed Salah, introduced from the bench in the second half, had the chance to add further gloss to the scoreline but saw his effort saved from a tight angle. The Egyptian opted to shoot rather than square the ball to Florian Wirtz, who appeared poised for a simple tap-in.
The decision didn’t sit well with Wirtz, who threw up his arms in frustration after Michael Zetterer’s save — a moment that quickly caught the attention of Liverpool fans online. Supporters took to social media to criticize Salah’s choice, calling it “greedy” and lamenting the missed opportunity for Wirtz to score his first goal for the club.
Despite the missed chance, Wirtz made a strong impact off the bench, registering two assists — setting up both Gakpo and Szoboszlai — to mark his first goal contributions in a Liverpool shirt. The young German will hope his performance was enough to earn a recall to Slot’s starting lineup.
Liverpool now turn their attention back to the Premier League, with a trip to Brentford awaiting on Saturday.
