Shock Arne Slot successor at Liverpool highlighted after three straight defeats

Xabi Alonso Tipped as Potential Successor to Arne Slot as Liverpool Endure Rare Losing Streak

Liverpool have suffered three consecutive defeats for the first time under Arne Slot, prompting early speculation about his long-term future — with Xabi Alonso already being mentioned as a potential successor.

When Jurgen Klopp announced his departure after nine remarkable seasons at Anfield, many feared a difficult transition. Instead, Slot’s debut campaign exceeded expectations as he guided Liverpool to the Premier League title, seamlessly continuing the success Klopp had built.

However, this season has seen a dip in form. Consecutive losses to Crystal Palace, Galatasaray, and Chelsea have brought mild pressure on the Dutch coach heading into the international break. Despite the slump, Slot remains firmly supported by the club hierarchy, with discussions already underway to extend his contract through 2027.

Still, the poor run has reignited conversations about Liverpool’s long-term direction — and one name that continues to surface is Xabi Alonso.

Former Spain midfielder Gaizka Mendieta believes that Alonso, a beloved figure at Anfield, could one day return to manage his former club.

“Could Xabi Alonso end up at Liverpool? I’m sure he could, because we always see these links with former players and clubs,” Mendieta told OLBG. “It’s a big advantage when someone already understands the club, the city, and the culture.

“I don’t think Liverpool were an option this summer after such a great first season under Arne Slot, but in the future, Alonso will definitely be on that list.”

Alonso’s Rise and Success

Alonso is already one of Europe’s most respected young managers. In May, he signed a three-year contract with Real Madrid, having left Bayer Leverkusen after a historic spell.

During the 2023–24 season, Alonso’s Leverkusen went unbeaten in domestic competitions, claiming both the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal titles. They narrowly missed a treble after losing the Europa League final to Atalanta.

Before joining Real Madrid, Alonso had been strongly linked with Liverpool following Klopp’s announcement, but chose to remain with Leverkusen for another season.

A Respectful Rivalry

Earlier this season, Liverpool faced Leverkusen in the Champions League, securing a dominant 4-0 win at Anfield — a humbling night for Alonso on his return to Merseyside. Despite the defeat, the Spaniard praised Slot’s work and Liverpool’s balance as a team.

“I think they are a complete team,” Alonso said. “They can defend, score, control games, and they’re efficient in both boxes.

“That’s a big strength in the Champions League. The coach is doing a great job so far — it looks like a promising season, but it’s still early.”

Despite Liverpool’s current setback, Slot remains well-regarded at the club for his achievements and professionalism. But with Alonso’s growing reputation — and his deep connection to Anfield — the idea of a future reunion continues to capture the imagination of Liverpool fans.
