Talks over a major new Liverpool contract have been paused, leaving the club ‘not in a strong position.’”

Liverpool Halt Contract Talks with Arne Slot Amid Ongoing Struggles

Liverpool have reportedly paused discussions over a new long-term contract for manager Arne Slot as the team’s poor run of form continues.

The Reds have now suffered six defeats in their last seven matches across all competitions, the latest setback coming in a 3–0 Carabao Cup loss to Crystal Palace at Anfield on Wednesday night — despite fielding a heavily rotated lineup.

Earlier this month, The Daily Express (via Sky Sports) reported that Slot’s agent had entered talks with Liverpool’s hierarchy to extend his contract beyond June 2027. Journalist Dean Jones also indicated that discussions were expected to “gain momentum” later in the season.

However, that optimism appears to have faded following the team’s slump. According to former Everton CEO Keith Wyness, speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Liverpool have decided to temporarily freeze negotiations.

“We’ve all heard about Slot’s contract situation and how talks can sometimes stall,” Wyness said. “It sounds like those discussions have now been paused. He’ll know he’s not in a strong position to negotiate at the moment.
I don’t think there’s any immediate pressure on him, but if results don’t improve soon, that could change. There’s still quality in that squad — he just needs to get them firing again. It’s not a crisis yet; I think they’ll recover.”

Board Still Standing by Slot

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has reported that Liverpool’s board continues to back Arne Slot, despite the pause in contract talks. While a contract extension is no longer a priority, there is currently no indication that the club is considering a managerial change.

Unlike other Premier League clubs that have made swift managerial decisions — such as Leicester City’s dismissal of Claudio Ranieri or Chelsea’s sacking of José Mourinho — Liverpool have a reputation for patience and stability.

Slot, however, has come under growing scrutiny for his tactical approach, team selections, and substitutions. Even so, it would seem premature to part ways with the manager who only months ago guided Liverpool to a dominant league title.

Should Liverpool rediscover their form in upcoming fixtures against Aston Villa, Real Madrid, and Manchester City, speculation about Slot’s future would likely ease. But if the poor results persist, pressure on the 47-year-old could quickly escalate.

For now, Slot’s immediate task is to halt the losing streak and rebuild confidence within the squad — a challenge reminiscent of Jürgen Klopp’s difficult spell in early 2017, which he ultimately turned into a resurgence.
