Ultimate professional’ promises Liverpool move as Madrid talk denied

A player widely praised for being the “ultimate professional” has reportedly assured Liverpool that he intends to join them, despite persistent rumours linking him with Real Madrid.

Liverpool kept their spending measured over the summer, yet many supporters on Merseyside still viewed Marc Guehi as the major signing that slipped through their fingers when his deadline-day transfer from Crystal Palace unexpectedly fell apart.

With just eight months remaining on his contract at Selhurst Park, speculation about his future has continued to intensify. Palace manager Oliver Glasner has already acknowledged that the 25-year-old “will depart next year.”

In his latest Liverpool Confidential column for Mail Sport, journalist Lewis Steele outlined the current picture surrounding the England international.

He wrote:
**“Liverpool target Marc Guehi — Crystal Palace’s captain and a near-signing on deadline day — has been linked with a free move to Real Madrid next summer. But sources in Spain have downplayed those rumours.

“Guehi remains on Liverpool’s shortlist, with discussions centring on whether to move in January or wait until the summer. People close to the situation in Madrid believe he has already given Liverpool his word that he plans to join the Premier League champions.”**

Although Liverpool fans may be wary after the dramatic collapse of his summer transfer, it appears Guehi’s interest in joining the Reds has not diminished.

Last month, Dean Jones told TEAMtalk that Guehi “is still keen” on a switch to Anfield — and if he truly has made an informal commitment, that stance seems to hold as 2026 approaches.

Even with such a promise, Liverpool must remain vigilant: foreign clubs will be able to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with the defender from January. However, with Alan Shearer previously calling Guehi the “ultimate professional” for refusing to force a move away from Palace in the summer, the centre-back is seen as someone who stands by his word.

Naturally, doubts will persist until the day Guehi is pictured unveiling a Liverpool shirt at Anfield. But if the latest reports from Spain are accurate, the long-awaited transfer to Merseyside may finally be edging closer.
