Liverpool could be close to securing a January signing even more exciting than Antoine Semenyo — at least in my view.
With the winter transfer window approaching, it’s increasingly clear that Liverpool need further reinforcements. Despite spending more than £400 million in the summer, the squad still looks unbalanced, and Arne Slot has struggled to blend his new arrivals into a cohesive unit. The result has been an inconsistent and often disappointing start to the campaign.
While supporters debate the team’s weaknesses, links to Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo have gained momentum. Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Liverpool’s interest, which has only heightened fan excitement about the Ghanaian attacker potentially making the move.
But although Semenyo could bring energy and depth, it’s questionable whether he should be a priority signing. Strengthening the midfield appears to be a far more urgent need — and that is where a much more intriguing target emerges.
Reports on Sunday connected Liverpool with Kees Smit, the highly rated AZ Alkmaar midfielder, suggesting the club may already be shifting their focus in that direction.
Why Kees Smit Would Be a More Exciting Signing Than Semenyo
It’s understandable that fans would welcome a lively attacker like Semenyo, who has shown he can score goals and cause problems for defenders. However, it’s hard to get overly excited about a player who was still representing Bristol City not long ago. While Semenyo has improved considerably, he is unlikely to transform Liverpool’s attack — especially when the club already boasts a deep pool of forwards.
Smit, on the other hand, is a player who genuinely fits a need. At just 19, he possesses the qualities to make a real impact in Liverpool’s midfield and would provide both depth and long-term upside. He may also serve as a strong alternative or backup option to Ryan Gravenberch, giving Slot more flexibility and stability in the center of the pitch.
If Liverpool are preparing to push for Smit in January, that could turn out to be a far more thrilling and meaningful acquisition than Semenyo.
