Man United Plot Stunning Move to Hijack Liverpool’s £40m Deal for Marc Guéhi

Manchester United are reportedly preparing to disrupt Liverpool’s pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guéhi, with the Eagles valuing the centre-back at roughly £40 million. Sources say United are closely monitoring the situation as they look to reinforce their squad ahead of the January window.

Their ability to move for Guéhi, however, could depend on Harry Maguire’s future. The former captain has slipped down the pecking order under Erik ten Hag, and with several Premier League clubs showing interest, United are open to selling if a suitable offer is made. Maguire’s exit would free up both funds and space for another defensive addition.

Guéhi has been one of the Premier League’s most consistent performers over the last two campaigns, earning praise for his composure, ball-playing ability, and leadership. His displays have attracted attention from several top-flight clubs, and with his contract entering its final 18 months, Palace are expected to cash in rather than risk losing him for nothing.

Despite United’s interest, Liverpool are still viewed as favourites for the 23-year-old. Guéhi is believed to prefer a move to Anfield, where he has been a long-standing target as part of the club’s ongoing defensive rebuild. Even with Jürgen Klopp’s departure and Arne Slot’s arrival, Liverpool continue to see him as a perfect fit for their system and long-term project.

For Manchester United, signing Guéhi would represent both a solution and a gamble. Their main January objective is securing a defensive midfielder, but recurring injuries to Lisandro Martínez and uncertainty surrounding Raphaël Varane have highlighted the need for extra defensive depth. Whether United make a formal move will likely depend on Maguire’s departure.

Liverpool, in contrast, hold the advantage thanks to Guéhi’s interest and their strong track record with defensive development. His camp is reportedly attracted by Liverpool’s clear pathway for young players and the prospect of regular Champions League football — something United cannot currently guarantee.

Crystal Palace are preparing for offers as a potential bidding battle between two Premier League giants takes shape. The club is expected to demand the full £40 million fee, with performance-related add-ons potentially pushing the deal higher.

No matter where he ends up, Marc Guéhi looks set to be one of the headline defensive targets of the upcoming window — with Liverpool leading the race and Manchester United waiting in the wings, another intense transfer showdown seems inevitable.
