Conor Gallagher ‘Open to Joining’ Man Utd on Loan in January

Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher is reportedly open to joining Manchester United on loan in January, with journalist Graeme Bailey claiming the Englishman is ready to consider a mid-season move after struggling for consistent playing time in Spain.

Gallagher is said to be one of several midfielders on United’s shortlist for 2025, alongside Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and fellow England international Elliot Anderson. And according to new reports, United’s chances of bringing Gallagher to Old Trafford this winter have grown, with the player now willing to explore a temporary exit from Atletico.

United were keen on Gallagher during the final days of the summer transfer window but opted to delay their midfield rebuild until January, with INEOS now viewing the addition of a new midfielder as a “top priority.”

Gallagher Open to Manchester United Switch

Speaking to United in Focus, Bailey revealed that Gallagher has grown “increasingly frustrated” with his lack of minutes in Diego Simeone’s side. Despite settling well into life in Madrid, the 25-year-old is reportedly concerned that his limited involvement could harm his hopes of making England’s World Cup squad.

Bailey explained:

“Gallagher has become increasingly frustrated at Atletico. He is settled in the Spanish capital but believes he should be in the England conversation. That won’t happen without regular playing time.

He knows about United’s interest, and I’m told the club is an appealing option for him.

United are aware other teams are monitoring him, and they will need to make a decision soon ahead of the January window.

Even with recent good form, the feeling within the club is that more holding midfield depth is needed — and Gallagher could provide that.”

Gallagher joined Atletico from Chelsea in the summer of 2024 but has started only four matches this season, scoring once in the Champions League. He has made just two La Liga starts, despite Atletico being unbeaten in their last 11 league games after losing to Espanyol on opening day.

The “incredible” midfielder is under contract at the Wanda Metropolitano until 2029, but his lack of international involvement may prompt a move. Gallagher last featured for England in June, starting a friendly under Thomas Tuchel, and he has missed the last three squad selections. His most recent competitive appearance for the Three Lions came in November last year.
