Breaking Update:
Paul Joyce reports that Liverpool’s owners held internal discussions on Thursday, with Michael Edwards moving closer to selecting a new manager who fits a 4-3-3 system.
Arne Slot is under growing pressure as Liverpool’s situation worsens, and new claims suggest Edwards could turn to a former Premier League manager if the team’s fortunes don’t improve soon.
Slot has admitted he is “shocked” by how rapidly Liverpool have unravelled.
Liverpool’s 3–0 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest signaled a full-blown crisis — and the 4–1 collapse against PSV Eindhoven has only intensified concerns that Slot may not be able to reverse the team’s decline.
This poor run comes after the club smashed their transfer record twice in the summer to back their title-winning coach. Few expected such a dramatic downturn from last season’s champions, and Slot says the recent slump has stunned everyone involved.
“It’s a shock for all of us — for the players, the journalists here, myself, everyone. With the quality we have, this situation is completely unexpected. Is it confidence? I didn’t see that missing in the first half.
“It becomes very difficult when, after losing 3–0, you concede immediately again. But I saw the mentality we’ve shown many times since I arrived: we pushed back, created chances, controlled the half. Even after the 2–1 setback, we kept creating opportunities to level the game.
“But toward the end, I could see one or two players were weighed down when it became 3–1 and 4–1, that’s clear.”
Liverpool traditionally avoids sacking managers, but reports now claim that Edwards is an admirer of Ange Postecoglou — and with results worsening, pressure on Slot is intensifying.
Liverpool weighing Postecoglou option as Joyce reveals crisis talks
Paul Joyce posted on social media that Liverpool’s hierarchy met with Slot on Thursday to address the team’s alarming form.
TeamTalk reports that Edwards holds Postecoglou in high esteem, unaffected by the Australian’s short and difficult spell at Nottingham Forest or his disappointing final season at Tottenham.
Postecoglou favors an aggressive 4-3-3 with a high defensive line and demands “relentless” pressing from his teams. He has been out of work since his brief eight-game run at Forest, where he collected only 0.25 points per match.
Sources at Anfield told TeamTalk that while Slot is currently “under pressure,” he is not on the brink of being sacked.
“[Is he at risk?] Yes and no — he’s under pressure, but the situation isn’t as black-and-white as people think.
“We’re going through a tough time. Jota’s death has deeply affected the club, and a drop-off after Jurgen was expected.
“We’re entering a new era — new coach, new staff, younger squad. This was always part of the long-term plan.
“He simply cannot keep losing, that’s obvious. Three or four more bad results would change everything. But there’s more patience internally than outsiders assume.
“We don’t change managers lightly at Liverpool. FSG dislike knee-jerk decisions, and they still view this as the start of a multi-year project.”
It’s a difficult moment for Liverpool’s leadership. Slot became only the second manager in club history to deliver a Premier League title, yet their recent performances have been poor enough to spark real doubts about whether he can turn things around — especially as the same mistakes continue to surface week after week.
