Liverpool identify long-term target to replace Arne Slot as Jurgen Klopp plan emerges…

Liverpool may once again turn to Jurgen Klopp to steady the ship, even as the club evaluates another manager as a potential long-term successor to Arne Slot.

According to reports, Liverpool’s hierarchy has identified Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique as a future managerial option should they decide to part ways with Slot.

The Reds are in freefall, losing nine of their last 12 matches—a nightmare run that effectively ended their Premier League title defense before the Christmas period. Their 4–1 Champions League defeat to PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday was their third straight loss by a margin of three goals, the club’s worst such sequence in 73 years.

Slot, who guided Liverpool to the league title in his debut campaign at Anfield, now finds himself under pressure after a turbulent second season despite a summer outlay exceeding £400 million. Though club executives still back the Dutchman, Curtis Jones’ brutally honest post-match comments after the PSV loss exposed the depth of the current crisis.

Klopp—who stepped down last year following a nine-year reign—has emerged as the leading short-term option if Liverpool opt for a managerial change. Now serving as Red Bull’s Head of Global Sport, Klopp has previously refused to rule out a managerial return. The Sun reports that Liverpool could approach him to guide the team through the remainder of the season in an interim capacity.

Meanwhile, Enrique is viewed as the preferred long-term candidate by the club’s ownership. Widely respected, the Spaniard guided PSG to a long-awaited Champions League triumph last season. With top-level experience in Spain, Italy, France, and as manager of the Spanish national team, he has already stated his ambition to coach in England.

“I mainly follow the Premier League because I would like to work in England,” Enrique said in 2023. “But I wouldn’t join just any team—only one capable of achieving major success. That narrows the possibilities significantly.”

For now, Slot will hope to turn Liverpool’s fortunes around before any drastic decisions are made. Sunday’s trip to West Ham United may prove to be a defining moment for the former Feyenoord boss.
