Nathaniel Brown – the key to helping Man Utd return to Europe

Man Utd Steps Up Pursuit of Nathaniel Brown

While Arsenal, Manchester City, and Chelsea are focused on fine-tuning their squads for a title push, Manchester United’s goals this season are more measured: to slowly work their way back into the European qualification positions.

After a poor start that cast doubt over manager Ruben Amorim’s future, United have shown noticeable improvement since the October international break. With just one loss in their last seven matches, the Red Devils have risen to seventh place—only three points off the Champions League spots.

Nathaniel Brown is attracting strong interest from several major European clubs.
During the 2025 summer window, United spent more than £200 million to reinforce their attack with Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko, and secured goalkeeper Senne Lammens. Although Sir Jim Ratcliffe is unlikely to authorize any major transfers in January, Amorim still hopes to strengthen the team if suitable opportunities appear.

One area the Portuguese coach is keen to upgrade is the wing-back position in his 3-4-3 setup. According to journalist Florian Plettenberg, United have now joined Real Madrid and Barcelona in the race to sign Eintracht Frankfurt’s left-back Nathaniel Brown.

The 22-year-old German defender, valued at around £50 million, is known for his pace and quality deliveries from wide areas. Brown made his senior Germany debut in October and is expected to be part of Julian Nagelsmann’s squad for next summer’s World Cup.

Amorim has also expressed regret about not securing a central midfielder last summer. With Kobbie Mainoo still developing, Casemiro aging, and Manuel Ugarte struggling for form, the midfield has become a top priority.

Conor Gallagher is viewed as the most affordable target. Atletico Madrid are reportedly open to selling for around €30 million—significantly cheaper than options such as Baleba, Wharton, or Anderson.
