Liverpool’s owners have made their stance clear on Arne Slot in the wake of Mohamed Salah’s seismic interview, according to a new report.
Liverpool threw away a two-goal advantage in a chaotic 3–3 draw with Leeds United on Saturday.
Hugo Ekitike struck twice in quick succession early in the second half, only for Leeds to respond immediately with two goals of their own. Dominik Szoboszlai restored Liverpool’s lead, but Ao Tanaka struck deep into stoppage time to snatch a dramatic point for the home side.
However, all the post-match focus shifted away from the result and onto Mohamed Salah, who delivered a stunning interview after being left on the bench throughout the match at Elland Road.
The 33-year-old said Liverpool had “thrown [him] under the bus” and claimed his relationship with head coach Arne Slot has broken down completely.
Fans and pundits — including Michael Owen — questioned the timing of Salah’s remarks, especially with Slot already under heavy scrutiny as Liverpool’s disappointing run continues.
The Reds have now lost nine of their last 15 games in all competitions, suffering heavy defeats to rivals such as Chelsea, Manchester United, and Manchester City.
Yet according to Paul Joyce of The Times, Fenway Sports Group still intend to stand by Slot through this turbulent period and have shown “no sign” of losing confidence in him. That said, Joyce reports that while the owners are willing to be patient, that patience “will not be endless,” emphasizing that Slot’s job security will depend on results — not on Salah “stamping his feet.”
Salah, who has five goals this season, has been benched for Liverpool’s last three matches after previously being a guaranteed starter under Slot.
He was dropped for the game against West Ham and did not feature in the 2–0 win at the London Stadium. He came on at halftime during the draw with Sunderland, and once again played no role in the match against Leeds.
With the Africa Cup of Nations beginning on December 15, Salah’s Liverpool future has been thrown into doubt after he hinted that next weekend’s match against Brighton could be his final appearance for the club — despite signing a lucrative two-year contract extension in April.
Liverpool now shift their focus to Tuesday, when they face Inter Milan as their Champions League campaign resumes.
