Manchester United is on the brink of a new era with Ruben Amorim set to take over as manager. After a challenging period under Erik ten Hag, which saw the team earn just 11 points from their first nine Premier League matches, the club is seeking a fresh approach to rejuvenate their season. Former United striker Dwight Yorke is already optimistic about what Amorim can bring to the team and has a bold suggestion: signing Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez to strengthen United’s attack.
United has struggled with scoring this season, with current forwards Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee netting only two Premier League goals between them. As a result, there is growing speculation that the club will look to bolster its forward line in the upcoming January transfer window. Yorke believes Nunez, known for his physicality and aggressive play, could provide the spark the team needs. He envisions Nunez thriving with more regular minutes on the pitch, gaining confidence, and potentially becoming one of the Premier League’s top strikers.
In a recent interview, Yorke expressed his admiration for Nunez and urged United to pursue him. “If I had to choose a number nine to lead United’s attack, it would be Darwin Nunez,” Yorke said. “While some may question his recent form, I see great untapped potential in him. His physicality, drive, and aggression would make him an ideal fit for United.”
Nunez joined Liverpool from Benfica in 2022 for £85 million, but despite flashes of brilliance, his consistency has been an issue. This season, he has scored just once in the Premier League, but Yorke remains confident that Nunez could thrive in a new setting with more opportunities to play.
Yorke further emphasized his belief in Nunez, saying, “I would take a chance on Nunez. While Ollie Watkins is a solid option, United needs someone with even more physical presence up front. With regular playing time and the right support, Nunez could become a major force in the Premier League.”
Although Nunez is contracted with Liverpool until 2028, reports suggest that the club may look to add another striker by 2025, potentially opening the door for United to target Nunez in the future.
As Amorim prepares to officially take charge during the November international break, his influence is already being felt. Sources indicate that Amorim is planning significant changes to the squad, with several players expected to be put on the transfer list in January. Among those likely to be sold are Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelof, Casemiro, and Antony, as United looks to trim its wage bill and restructure the squad.
The decision to part with these players is also financially motivated. With high earners like Casemiro (£350,000 per week) and Antony (£200,000 per week), United could potentially fetch around £25 million for each in transfer fees. Eriksen and Lindelof might stay until their contracts expire in the summer, avoiding transfer fees.
As Amorim’s reign begins, United fans are hopeful that these changes represent a fresh start. The prospect of adding a dynamic forward like Nunez, combined with a strategic overhaul of the squad, could pave the way for United’s return to the top of English football.
