During the summer transfer window, Manchester United has yet to bolster their midfield, keeping Frenkie de Jong’s name in the headlines once again.
Erik ten Hag, who previously managed de Jong at Ajax before his move to Barcelona, has long been keen on the £86 million Dutch midfielder.
Two years ago, Manchester United reached an agreement to purchase the Dutch star from Barcelona for 80 million euros, but de Jong opted to stay at the Nou Camp.
Now, according to Spanish outlet Nacional, Ten Hag is reportedly suggesting a swap deal involving Antony in an effort to bring Frenkie de Jong to Manchester United.
Under Netherlands manager Erik ten Hag at Ajax, the Brazilian international Antony excelled, but he has been a major disappointment in the Premier League.
After his £86 million transfer from the Eredivisie to Manchester United, Antony scored only once in 29 league matches last season.
Thus, it’s surprising that Ten Hag would consider using what has been arguably the biggest disappointment in the squad to secure Frenkie de Jong, a key player for Barcelona.
It’s not surprising that Barcelona reportedly isn’t interested in Antony; they are looking for a winger but do not see the South American as a fit. Barcelona already has Raphinha and Lamine Yamal as superior options on the right wing.
Manchester United will need to explore other strategies if they want to have a chance of acquiring De Jong.
