Liverpool step up bid for first huge signing of the Arne Slot era ahead of January transfer window

Liverpool are reportedly ready to step up their bid to bring in the first big signing of the Arne Slot era.

After replacing Jürgen Klopp in the summer, former AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord manager Arne Slot has enjoyed a strong start to his tenure at Anfield.

Liverpool have lost just one match so far — a surprising 1-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest — and currently sit at the top of both the Premier League and the Champions League.

With the team’s momentum clearly building, reports suggest that the club’s owners may look to sign a star player during the January transfer window.

According to French outlet RMC, Liverpool are showing interest in Lyon’s 21-year-old rising talent, Rayan Cherki.

French journalist Matt Spiro shared on social media: “Liverpool are intensifying their efforts to sign Rayan Cherki. Arne Slot and the recruitment team are all fans of the Lyon playmaker. Liverpool could make a move in January. Lyon are asking for €30m, but may accept less (RMC).”

Foot Mercato further reports that Lyon have set a price range of at least £24.9 million, hoping to secure up to £29.1 million for the highly rated Frenchman.

This season, Cherki has played 11 matches across all competitions, scoring two goals and providing three assists.

Club president John Textor recently commented on Rayan Cherki’s future, stating: “We lost €15m from his sale last summer, but his value has significantly increased now.”

He added, “He should stay in January, but ultimately, it’s up to Rayan to decide what he wants to do.”

Liverpool will return to action this weekend with an away match against Southampton at St. Mary’s Stadium in the Premier League.

Following their clash with the Saints, Liverpool will face two critical fixtures in their pursuit of silverware this season, taking on Manchester City and Real Madrid within just five days.
