Liverpool fans have turned on one player despite late comeback win vs Southampton

Even after Liverpool’s thrilling comeback victory over Southampton at St. Mary’s, the Reds’ supporters were still upset about one of their own players. Even though they extended their lead at the top of the table and secured three crucial points, Uruguayan striker Darwin Núñez’s performance prompted harsh criticism from fans, many of whom are growing impatient with the forward as he begins his third season on Merseyside. Dominik Szoboszlai gave Liverpool the lead early in the game by taking advantage of a startling mistake made by Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy. But Southampton, stuck at the bottom of the table, wouldn’t give up. Adam Armstrong’s conversion was the first of two swift strikes that completely changed the course of the match.

the rebound following Caoimhin Kelleher’s save of his penalty. Many people criticized the referee’s soft and contentious penalty call, which became a significant talking point. Russell Martin’s team took the lead early in the second half when Mateus Fernandes completed a deft play. But Liverpool made a valiant comeback by going all out. Mohamed Salah scored twice to save the Reds, once again demonstrating why he is regarded as a talisman. His first goal was a crisp finish, and he earned all three points with his second goal, a well-executed penalty in the 83rd minute. With his brace, the Egyptian increased his season total to a whopping 10 goals, solidifying his place among the Premier League’s most consistent match-winners. News that adds to the drama.

The news that Tottenham Hotspur had defeated Manchester City, Liverpool’s bitterest rivals, 4-0 at home added to the drama. Liverpool is now eight points clear at the top and in first place going into their next matchup with Pep Guardiola’s faltering team after City suffered their fifth straight loss. Núñez’s performance, however, became a lightning rod for criticism in spite of all the positives. Throughout the game, the former Benfica forward mostly remained anonymous and provided little in the way of movement, inventiveness, or offensive threat. Many supporters felt that Núñez’s lackluster performance was summed up when he was spotted deliberately pretending to make contact with Saints captain Jack Stephens.

On social media, a frustrated fan posted: “It’s unbelievable that Nunez isn’t leaving.” Poor performance, lengthy international break, and—above all—Gakpo has been among our top players! “Is Nunez going to do a single thing in the box this game?” asked another, questioning his total contribution. We don’t seem to have a striker on the field. There was more criticism to come. “How is Darwin Nunez still on the pitch?” asked a third fan in utter shock. Another person, however, expressed their annoyance by offering substitutes: “I’d rather Diaz play 9 than Nunez.” Darwin provides incredibly tasty  everything.

Núñez’s lackluster performance only served to emphasize to many fans how urgently Diogo Jota has to get back to full fitness. Fans feel that because Jota is out, Liverpool has been forced to rely on a player who hasn’t been able to live up to the expectations that came with his move from Portugal or continuously justify his high price tag. As Liverpool advances in their pursuit of Premier League success, Núñez is faced with a decision. Even though Klopp has frequently publicly defended him and lauded his potential, the Anfield supporters’ patience seems to be wearing thin. Time is running out for Núñez to silence his detractors and establish his worth as a member of a team that is striving for elite status.
