Mo Salah seemingly aimed a dig at Jamie Carragher following Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Man City at Anfield on Sunday.
Salah, 32, set up Cody Gakpo’s first goal and later scored a penalty 12 minutes before the end to give Liverpool an 11-point lead over fifth-placed Man City and a nine-point advantage over second-placed Arsenal.
After Liverpool’s 3-2 victory against Southampton last Sunday, Salah admitted he felt “more out than in” when speaking to reporters.
On Sky Sports’ MNF, Carragher expressed his disappointment with Salah’s comments.
“I must say, I am very disappointed with Mo Salah,” Carragher said on Sky Sports’ MNF.
“With that interview yesterday…Liverpool has Real Madrid midweek and Manchester City at the weekend – that’s the focus for Liverpool right now.
“And Mo Salah, as we know, has only stopped in the mixed zone twice in his seven years at the club, which is perfectly his choice, but he decided to stop for a third time after winning the game for Liverpool against Southampton.”
“The most important thing is Liverpool winning the Premier League,” he continued.
“That’s more crucial than any individual player, and if he keeps making such comments, or if his agent keeps tweeting, that’s selfish.”
However, he did acknowledge that he was “desperate” for both the player and the club to “meet in the middle” regarding a contract agreement.
After Liverpool’s win against Manchester City, Salah and Van Dijk were interviewed by Sky Sports. When Van Dijk was presenting the Player of the Match award to Salah, he remarked, “I’m surprised Carra didn’t give it to you.” Salah responded, “He wouldn’t… never, he [Jamie Carragher] wouldn’t give it to me.”
When asked about his contract situation, the Egyptian forward admitted that this could have been his last game against Manchester City at Anfield, as his current contract expires in the summer of 2025.
“Honestly, it’s in my head [that it might be my last time facing Man City at Anfield],” Salah said in his post-match interview. “Until now, this is the last City game I will play for Liverpool, so I was just going to enjoy it. The atmosphere was incredible, so I will enjoy every second here. Hopefully, we just win the league, and we’ll see what happens.”
Later, in the Sky Sports studio, Carragher reinforced his earlier comments.
“I have no problem with Salah and Van Dijk,” he said. “They are two of the greatest for Liverpool. Liverpool is a club run by data. I’m not saying he shouldn’t get a two-year deal or receive big money.
“He’s already on significant wages. The club isn’t built on just giving players what they want. That’s been a key factor in the club’s success. They are ahead of the game.”
