Gravenberch explains the reason in his major improvement under Arne Slot
Ryan Gravenberch has made an impressive start to the 2024/25 season under Liverpool’s new manager, Arne Slot. The 22-year-old midfielder has become one of the key players for the Reds, showing significant improvement in his performances. He has featured in nearly every match so far, with the exception of the 5-1 win over West Ham in the EFL Cup, where Slot opted to rest him.
Gravenberch’s efforts have not gone unnoticed, as he has earned two ‘Man of the Match’ awards—one for his standout performance in Liverpool’s 3-1 victory over AC Milan at San Siro, and another in their 2-1 win against Wolves in the Premier League.
His partnership in midfield with Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister has been highly effective, as the trio has dominated games together. Gravenberch has firmly established himself as a key figure in Slot’s tactical setup, a far cry from last season under Jurgen Klopp, when he only started 12 Premier League matches and often found himself behind Wataru Endo in the starting lineup.
Even Liverpool’s board was initially uncertain about Ryan Gravenberch’s potential as the main defensive midfielder, which led them to pursue Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad. However, the move was ultimately rejected as Zubimendi chose to remain at his boyhood club.
Reflecting on his development, Gravenberch believes he is the same player as he was last season, but acknowledges that adapting to the system can be challenging when he has limited involvement with the ball during matches. The arrival of Arne Slot, who understands his style of play, has made the transition easier. Gravenberch credits Slot’s trust in him, starting him in every match so far, for boosting his focus and confidence as he adapts to English football.
Gravenberch also expressed his ambition to win trophies in all competitions but recognizes that it is still early in the season. He emphasized the importance of learning from mistakes in difficult matches, so the team can continue to improve.
Liverpool’s next fixture will be a UEFA Champions League encounter against Serie A side Bologna at Anfield, scheduled for Wednesday at 20:00 UK Time. The Reds will aim to maintain their impressive form with another victory.
