One Manchester United player walked straight over to Jadon Sancho after he missed a penalty against Manchester City in the Community Shield.
City eventually triumphed in the shootout 7-6, with Manuel Akanji scoring the winning penalty.
United had the advantage after Andre Onana stopped Bernardo Silva’s shot, but Sancho missed his attempt, leading to a sudden death scenario for the two teams.
The England winger, taking his first competitive penalty since the Euro 2020 final, aimed for the right corner of the goal. However, Ederson made an excellent save, tipping the ball onto the post.
Sancho, visibly disheartened, trudged back to the center circle. At 24, he was somewhat unlucky that his shot didn’t go in after hitting the post.
Carl Anka from The Athletic observed that Bruno Fernandes, the team captain, was quick to approach Sancho and offer him consolation.
Throughout the 90 minutes, the United captain believed he had scored with a brilliant curling shot into the top right corner, but the goal was disallowed due to an offside call.
He successfully converted the first penalty in the shootout but ended up on the losing side as City claimed the Community Shield.
Pep Guardiola’s team won the trophy after having lost to Arsenal last year, with the Premier League season starting next week.
Sancho, meanwhile, has been a key player in pre-season for Erik ten Hag’s team, having been reintegrated into the first team.
After spending the latter part of last season on loan at Borussia Dortmund following a public clash with his manager, the two resolved their differences at the start of the summer. At 24, Sancho will look to have a strong season at Old Trafford and recover from the disappointment at Wembley.
United will begin their domestic league campaign on Friday by hosting Fulham at Old Trafford.
