Liverpool forward Luis Diaz has stated that Mohamed Salah’s potential departure would be a major setback for the team. The 32-year-old Salah, who signed his current contract in 2022, is now in the final year of his deal. Despite rumors suggesting he could leave in the summer, Salah stayed at Anfield, though discussions about a contract extension have reportedly stalled. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Salah has made a strong start to the season, scoring in all three of Liverpool’s matches, helping them secure second place in the Premier League, just behind Manchester City on goal difference.
Diaz, who scored twice in Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Manchester United, was assisted by Salah on both occasions. Speaking to Telemundo, Diaz shared his thoughts on Salah’s potential departure, as reported by the Daily Mail:
“It would be tough for us and for Liverpool. It will hurt us a lot. He still has a year left to think about it, and it’s not an easy decision. He always gives his best, right from the beginning. Losing such an important player would be very difficult for us. However, it’s his choice, and we respect that, but I hope he stays.”
After the match at Old Trafford, Salah himself hinted that it might have been his last appearance at the stadium, saying to Sky Sports (via the Daily Mail):
“I was on my way to the game thinking, ‘this might be my last time (at Old Trafford).’ Nobody from the club has spoken to me yet about a new contract. It’s not in my hands; it’s up to the club. We’ll have to wait and see.”
He added, “As everyone knows, it’s my final year here. I just want to enjoy it without thinking too much about my contract. Right now, I feel free to focus on football, and we’ll see what the future holds.”
Salah joined Liverpool in the summer of 2017 and has since become one of the club’s most vital players.
Mohamed Salah’s Record at Liverpool
Since his arrival at Anfield seven years ago, Salah has enjoyed an exceptional run with Liverpool. In 352 appearances across all competitions, he has scored 214 goals and provided 92 assists. The Egyptian forward has won every major title with the club, except the UEFA Europa League.
In the previous season, Salah contributed 25 goals and 14 assists in 44 appearances across all competitions, marking the final campaign under legendary manager Jürgen Klopp. His latest goal at Old Trafford also tied him with Alan Shearer for the most goals (10) scored by a player in away games against a single Premier League club.
