Liverpool ready to sign €85m striker after giving green light for Darwin Nunez sale

Liverpool are reportedly prepared to sell Darwin Nunez in the January transfer window and have already decided on their ideal replacement.

Since his move from Benfica in 2022 for around £85m, Nunez has struggled to live up to expectations at Liverpool and has now fallen out of favor with new manager Arne Slot.

Although he started most of Liverpool’s matches early in the season, he was eventually replaced by Diogo Jota after the latter’s return to full fitness. Currently, he is kept out of the starting lineup by the in-form Luis Diaz.

It now seems that Liverpool may be looking to sell Nunez, with reports indicating they are open to accepting an offer and replacing him with their preferred target.

According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool is willing to sell Nunez and is considering an offer from AC Milan, made earlier this week, to bring the Uruguayan forward to Serie A in a loan deal with an obligation to buy in the summer.

The report suggests that Slot has been unimpressed with Nunez’s performances in training and matches, which has led to his exclusion from recent starting lineups.

Should Liverpool decide to part ways with Nunez, they have reportedly identified Inter Milan striker Marcus Thuram as their top target. While Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak is also highly valued at Liverpool, the cost of acquiring him may be too steep.

Thuram’s current contract with Inter Milan includes a release clause of €85m (£70.5m), which is significantly lower than the potential cost of signing Isak, making Thuram a more affordable option for Liverpool and enabling a quicker deal.

Although Inter Milan is pleased with the French striker’s recent form, they are reportedly open to negotiating a fee with Liverpool that would be close to his release clause.

However, it seems unlikely that either Nunez or Thuram will move during the January transfer window, with summer transfers considered more probable.
