Chelsea’s fading hopes of winning the Premier League could be dashed after Enzo Maresca’s concerning injury update.
This weekend, Chelsea will resume Premier League play with a match against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon.
Under Maresca, Chelsea has made an impressive start to the season and were seen as Liverpool’s biggest threat for the title.
However, recent losses to Everton, Fulham, and Ipswich Town have left Chelsea 10 points behind Arne Slot’s team.
Currently, Chelsea is in fourth place in the Premier League, two points behind Nottingham Forest and four points adrift of Arsenal.
Enzo Maresca provides concerning update on Chelsea’s injury situation
Ahead of the game against Palace, Maresca shared a concerning update regarding defender Wesley Fofana.
The Italian coach said, “Unfortunately, he might be out for the season. We’re not entirely sure, but he could miss a significant part of it. I’ve said many times how much I admire Wes.
“This was the first update we had, but after further tests, it turned out to be worse than we initially thought. It’s a hamstring injury, and sadly, we’ll be without him for a while.”
Fofana has been out since being forced to leave the match against Aston Villa last month due to a hamstring injury.
Along with Fofana, Maresca confirmed that Benoit Badiashile won’t be back until next month.
He stated, “Unfortunately, Wes will be out for an extended period, and Benoit will likely return in February.”
The Chelsea manager also provided updates on Reece James and Romeo Lavia, saying, “Reece is back from the last match. Romeo is very close and has started training with us.”
Regarding club captain James, Maresca added, “He is back. He was part of the squad in the previous match, but the plan was not for him to play. Tomorrow, we aim to give him some minutes, and he should be ready to play soon.”
