Liverpool fans are fuming after finding out which player club bosses are prepared to leave this summer.
Arne Slot is gearing up for his debut season at Anfield, but there have been no new signings for his squad this summer. Liverpool seemed poised to acquire holding midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, with the Premier League club ready to activate his £51.7 million release clause.
However, after the Spain international requested time to consider his future, La Real convinced him to remain in San Sebastian with a better contract. According to The Athletic, Liverpool currently have no backup targets, as Zubimendi was viewed as the ideal candidate for the No. 6 position in Slot’s team.
With Zubimendi unavailable, Liverpool now have few options for holding midfielders.
Alexis Mac Allister and Wataru Endo filled the role last season, but the former offers more in a more advanced position while the latter has struggled to adapt to Slot’s possession-based system during pre-season.
Curtis Jones and Dominik Szoboszlai are in the same boat as Mac Allister, while Ryan Gravenberch has potential but is far from the finished article.
Stefan Bajcetic is another option, but Liverpool fans have been left dismayed by reports that the club are prepared to let him leave this summer.
The Athletic have reported that Liverpool bosses are prepared to sanction a loan move for the 19-year-old midfielder, as they want him to get regular minutes after missing most of last season through injury.
Bajcetic, who came to Liverpool’s youth academy from Celta Vigo in 2020, featured for only 25 minutes in the Premier League last season.
His departure would come after the sale of another young midfielder, Fabio Carvalho, who transferred to Brentford for £22.5 million.
Liverpool supporters on social media have expressed their desire for Bajcetic to remain and play a role in the first team.
“Without bringing in a defensive midfielder, this doesn’t make any sense,” one fan commented on X.
Another fan argued, “Endo as our top defensive midfielder? Are we serious? I understand not buying a defensive midfielder just to buy one, but getting rid of our options is absurd.”
Another frustrated supporter wrote, “More departures and no new signings. We are Cooked FC.” Meanwhile, a fourth fan commented, “Wow. He’ll actually get playing time now that Zubimendi isn’t coming.”
