Ansu Fati’s Time at Barça Is Over: Flick Clears the Path for His Exit

Ansu Fati’s time at Barcelona is nearing its end under coach Hansi Flick, who has made it clear that the 22-year-old no longer fits into his plans and needs to find a new club during the winter transfer window.

Flick’s Direct Message: “You’re Not Going to Play Here”

Before the Christmas break, Flick had an honest conversation with Fati, telling him: “It’s better for you to find a team; you’re not going to play here.” While recognizing Fati’s talent, Flick stated that the forward has not met the demanding standards required at Barcelona. He hinted that a potential return could be possible if Fati proves himself elsewhere but emphasized that, for now, a loan move is the best option.

Exclusion from Key Matches

Fati’s absence from important fixtures, such as the Super Cup semifinals and final, as well as the Copa del Rey match against Betis, highlights his current standing at the club. Despite being physically fit, Flick has not called him up for weeks. Normally, players who don’t feature in league or Champions League games are given chances in the Copa del Rey, but Fati has not been considered.

Flick attributed Fati’s lack of involvement to insufficient effort and progress following his injury: “After the injury, he didn’t show us his 100%. It’s a shame for him and for us. He has to work harder, like everyone else.”

Possible Destinations for Fati

Barcelona has tasked Fati’s agent, Jorge Mendes, with arranging a loan deal. Three La Liga clubs—Girona, Valencia, and Betis—have shown interest, although an earlier agreement with Sevilla has fallen through due to disagreements over the Olmo transfer.

Cesc Fàbregas’s Como, an ambitious Serie B side with former Barça and Real Madrid players like Sergi Roberto and Nico Paz, has also emerged as a potential destination for Fati.

A Career at a Turning Point

Fati’s previous loan spell at Brighton was unsuccessful in reigniting his career. Both Flick and Deco are hopeful that this next loan move will be the turning point, as Barcelona has made it clear that failing to perform at his new club will likely signal the end of his career at the Catalan giants.

The Number 10 Jersey Is Now Vacant

With Fati’s departure, the iconic number 10 jersey—previously worn by Lionel Messi—will be vacant. While there has been speculation that young talent Lamine Yamal could inherit the number, Flick has expressed concerns about placing such a significant responsibility on a 16-year-old.

With just 186 minutes of playing time this season and an impending move on the horizon, Fati is at a crossroads in his career. His ability to regain his form and prove his worth at a new club will determine whether he has a future at Barcelona.
