Darwin Nunez Fortunate to Escape Red Card in Liverpool’s 2-0 Win Over Brentford

Arne Slot’s Liverpool maintained their place at the top of the Premier League with a convincing 2-0 win over Brentford on Saturday.

However, some fans believe Darwin Nunez, who scored both goals in stoppage time, was lucky to avoid a red card during the match.

Thomas Frank’s Brentford, now sitting 11th in the league, played a disciplined game at the Gtech Community Stadium but were undone by Nunez’s late strikes. The 33-cap Uruguayan international, with 13 goals for his country, came on in the 65th minute, replacing Luis Diaz.

Given his limited playing time this season, Nunez took the opportunity to make an impact ahead of Liverpool’s upcoming match against Lille. He broke the deadlock in the 91st minute, finishing a low cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold, and followed up just two minutes later with another composed finish to seal the win.

However, controversy arose in the 95th minute when Nunez made a reckless challenge on Brentford’s Nathan Collins as the defender tried to clear the ball. Despite the risky tackle, Nunez escaped without a second yellow card, leaving many to believe he was fortunate not to face further punishment.

Although Liverpool fans were pleased with the three points, Nunez’s performance added to ongoing discussions about his form this season. Since Arne Slot replaced Jurgen Klopp in the summer, Nunez has struggled for consistency and has fallen behind players like Diaz and Diogo Jota in the pecking order.

With 37 goals and 21 assists in 122 appearances for Liverpool, Nunez’s contributions remain significant, but his form continues to be a topic of debate under Slot’s management.
