Barcelona secured a narrow 1-0 win over Alavés, but the match was overshadowed by a concerning head collision between Gavi and Tomás Conechny.
The impact left both players on the ground, prompting immediate reactions from teammates and staff. Medical personnel quickly entered the pitch to assess their conditions.
Play was paused for approximately five minutes while doctors examined the duo. Both were eventually substituted, though Gavi initially resisted, determined to continue playing.
The young midfielder walked to the sideline, insisting he was fine, but the club doctor remained unconvinced due to safety concerns. Ronald Araújo and Raphinha also encouraged Gavi to prioritize his health. Ultimately, manager Hansi Flick had to step in to convince him to leave the field, with Fermin López coming on as his replacement.
Barcelona later released a statement emphasizing Gavi’s resilience but also highlighting the importance of prioritizing player well-being. Fortunately, medical evaluations showed no signs of serious injury or loss of consciousness, allowing him to recover at home.
“During this afternoon’s match against Alavés, Gavi suffered a head injury without loss of consciousness. The tests have been normal, and he has been discharged to recover at home,” the club stated.
At present, there are no indications that Gavi will miss any upcoming games. His availability will be a significant boost for Barcelona as they prepare for a crucial Copa del Rey quarter-final against Valencia on Thursday.
