Liverpool’s dreams of a quadruple were dashed after a disappointing 1-0 loss to Championship side Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup. Missing 10 key players, Liverpool fielded a much-changed side that struggled to break down the opposition. A penalty by Ryan Hardie after a handball by Harvey Elliott proved to be the decisive moment, sending Liverpool crashing out of the competition.
Despite the defeat, Liverpool’s attention must now shift to their Premier League title race, where they still maintain a six-point lead, as well as their upcoming League Cup final and Champions League round of 16 clash. Here’s how the players rated on the night:
Player Ratings
Caoimhin Kelleher – 7
Made some solid saves, including a crucial deflection off Hardie’s header. Could do nothing about the penalty.
James McConnell – 7
Performed well after shifting from right-back to midfield. Forced a save and was aggressive in tackles, although he missed a late chance.
Jarell Quansah – 6
Strong in the air but was guilty of holding onto the ball too long and inconsistent in long-range passes.
Joe Gomez – N/A
Injured after just 10 minutes of play.
Kostas Tsimikas – 6
Had an early mistake but recovered well defensively. Struggled to make an impact offensively.
Wataru Endo – 7
Stepped in as captain and played center-back after Gomez’s injury. Composed and solid in an unfamiliar role.
Federico Chiesa – 4
Barely involved in the first 20 minutes. Struggled in the second half and contributed little to the team’s attacking efforts.
Harvey Elliott – 4
Was unable to influence the game as a number 10 and conceded the penalty that sealed Liverpool’s fate. His passing was off, and he struggled with Plymouth’s defense.
Luis Diaz – 4
Had a frustrating night, with little protection from the referee. His impact faded in the second half.
Diogo Jota – 5
Largely ineffective in the first half but worked harder after the break. His long-range shot in injury time was saved.
Isaac Mabaya (on for Gomez, 11’) – 6
Impressive on his senior debut, showing no nerves despite the circumstances. Booked and had little influence but was involved in a late shot and header.
Trent Kone-Doherty (on for Nyoni, 76’) – 6
Made his debut in an unexpected midfield role, though had limited involvement in the match.
Liverpool will be disappointed by this result, especially with the added frustration of key players failing to seize the opportunity. Their focus now turns to the rest of the season, and they’ll need to bounce back quickly.
