Liverpool failed to find a goal in the first half of their season opener against Ipswich Town, and fans are blaming one player.
Arne Slot’s first Premier League season began on Saturday morning with Liverpool visiting Portman Road Stadium to play against newly-promoted Ipswich Town.
The Reds faced difficulties in the first half, not managing a single shot on target during the first 45 minutes.
Liverpool supporters have reacted to this, particularly criticizing one player who seemed to have a tough game.
Andrew Robertson’s inclusion in the starting lineup was unexpected, especially since he had only played 61 minutes during preseason against Las Palmas.
One fan was notably harsh in their critique of the Scottish player, commenting on X: “Just three minutes into the season and I’m already fed up with Robertson. His performances have been disgraceful for a long time; he’s not even up to championship level anymore.”
Another fan questioned Slot’s decision to include Robertson in the lineup, stating: “The only advantage of Robertson starting now is that Slot will see firsthand that he’s no longer up to standard.”
Meanwhile, one supporter suggested that Robertson’s performance might be due to his limited preseason minutes, saying: “Andy Robertson has been poor in these early moments; maybe he’s lacking fitness. Despite traveling to the USA for training, he only had eight days to get ready for the season opener against Ipswich Town.”
Slot clarified Robertson’s delayed training, stating: “He had a minor injury going into the Euros, and needed time to recover afterward after playing in those games.”
Robertson played nearly 400 minutes in the 2024 Euros, leading Scotland as captain, but they were eliminated in the group stage, failing to advance after losses to Hungary and Germany and a draw with Switzerland.
Kostas Tsimikas, who was anticipated to start the season as Liverpool’s left-back after a strong preseason, was instead left on the bench for the match.
