Ilkay Gundogan has ‘asked to leave Barcelona’ before the end of the summer transfer window, according to a report.
Gundogan joined Barcelona from Manchester City on a free transfer last summer, signing a two-year contract. During his first season with the club, he made 51 appearances in all competitions. Now, the German midfielder wishes to leave Camp Nou as he enters the final year of his contract. According to Spanish outlet SPORT, Hansi Flick is aware of Gundogan’s desire to leave.
The report also indicates that two clubs are leading the pursuit for Gundogan. Galatasaray has shown interest, with their president, Dursun Ozbek, personally keen on acquiring him. However, they face competition from Fenerbahce, managed by Jose Mourinho, who are also monitoring the situation and have stated they will make every effort to complete the transfer if possible. Fenerbahce’s inability to qualify for the Champions League, however, might hinder the move. A transfer to Turkey might be fitting, considering Gundogan’s Turkish heritage.
Clubs in Saudi Arabia are also keeping an eye on the 33-year-old’s situation at Barcelona. Gundogan had a stellar career at Manchester City before joining the Spanish club, spending seven successful seasons in England where he won five Premier League titles and the Champions League as part of City’s treble-winning squad.
Despite winning three major trophies in the 2022/23 season, Gundogan’s departure from Manchester City was a decision Pep Guardiola now regrets.
Reports suggest that Guardiola felt Gundogan’s absence, missing both his influence on the field and his overall impact. Guardiola wanted to retain him, but the club was unable to meet the player’s contract demands.
