Odds slashed on player to join Liverpool in move that nobody saw coming

Odds have slashed on one surprise player to join Liverpool before the end of the summer transfer window.

Liverpool began their Arne Slot era with a hard-fought 2-0 win over newly-promoted Ipswich Town on Saturday, thanks to second-half goals from Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah.

As the new season starts, Liverpool are the only Premier League team yet to sign any new players. Recently, Liverpool’s interest in Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi was thwarted when the Spaniard declined a move to Anfield.

With the transfer window closing soon, odds have shortened on Jarrad Branthwaite making a surprise move from Everton to Liverpool. Throughout the summer, the defender was frequently linked with Manchester United, who reportedly had two bids for the 22-year-old rejected. Sky Bet now lists Branthwaite at 2/1 to join Liverpool, compared to United at 3/1. Everton manager Sean Dyche expressed confidence that the club will do its best to remain competitive despite the speculation.

Dyche remarked, “The club faces external pressures that are beyond my control.”

He continued, “They need to better balance the finances. Since I’ve been here, we’ve worked extensively on this with Kev [Thelwell], focusing on generating revenue and reducing the wage bill. I think we’ve done a fairly good job in that regard, but the overall financial picture of the club depends on the money required at any given time.”

Branthwaite did not feature in Everton’s 3-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon.
