Liverpool and Newcastle Set for Transfer Battle Over Marc Guehi
Liverpool and Newcastle United are gearing up for a summer showdown over Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, one of the Premier League’s most sought-after center-backs.
Guehi on the Radar of Top Clubs
Newcastle previously attempted to sign Guehi but failed to reach an agreement. His impressive performances at Euro 2024 have only increased interest, with multiple clubs now closely monitoring his situation.
Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes both Liverpool and Newcastle are preparing bids, though he sees Liverpool as the frontrunners.
Liverpool Leading the Race?
Speaking to Football Insider, Robinson said:
“Liverpool would be a great destination for him. Palace won’t let him leave for free, so this summer is their best chance to cash in.
“With just 12 months left on his deal, his price might drop slightly—but a bidding war could prevent that. Newcastle pushed hard last summer, and Palace will expect a similar fee again.
“It’ll come down to the highest bidder, and he’ll have options beyond the Premier League. Palace chairman Steve Parish is a tough negotiator, so this won’t be an easy deal.”
Robinson also noted that Liverpool’s recent conservative spending puts them in a strong position financially, giving them an edge over Newcastle within the constraints of Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.
Liverpool’s Defensive Priorities
With Arne Slot set to take over and uncertainty surrounding Virgil van Dijk’s future, Liverpool are in urgent need of defensive reinforcements. Their financial flexibility makes them well-placed to secure Guehi ahead of Newcastle.
For Crystal Palace, retaining their star defender will be difficult. Guehi’s contract runs until 2026, but with just a year left on his deal after this season, Palace may have no choice but to sell while they still can.
