FSG have broken their own golden rule for Mo Salah’s Liverpool contract as length of new deal emerges

Mo Salah is reportedly closing in on a contract which will break FSG’s golden rule at Liverpool.

Salah Close to Extending Liverpool Stay Despite Contract Uncertainty

Mohamed Salah, who is the frontrunner for the PFA Player of the Year award and a top contender for the Ballon d’Or after scoring 32 goals and providing 22 assists this season, is set to become a free agent in the summer. His contract situation has been a major talking point throughout the season.

In November, Salah caused concern among Liverpool fans during a surprise interview after a victory over Southampton, where he admitted he hadn’t received any offers to extend his stay at the club and hinted he was “probably more out than in.”

However, unlike Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is reportedly nearing a move to Real Madrid, Salah seems poised to extend his eight-year tenure at Anfield.

A major update came on Wednesday, with Liverpool journalists such as Paul Joyce of The Times revealing that Salah is close to finalizing a new deal with the Premier League leaders. Fabrizio Romano also confirmed that negotiations are in the final stages, and the deal appears to be progressing positively. Lewis Steele of The Daily Mail added that while the exact length of the contract is unclear, a two-year extension seems likely.

This potential agreement would break Liverpool’s usual policy under Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which typically avoids offering contract extensions to players over 30. However, Salah, at 32, is still in excellent form, and it seems the club is prepared to make an exception for their star forward.

In addition, Virgil van Dijk, who will turn 34 in July, is also likely to remain at Liverpool following a positive breakthrough in contract talks. This would similarly go against the club’s previous stance on players aged 30 and above, a policy that was shaped under former sporting director Michael Edwards, who now works as FSG’s chief executive of football.

Regarding his own contract, Van Dijk told reporters after Liverpool’s 3-2 loss to Fulham that there has been progress in discussions but did not confirm a deal yet, saying, “I don’t know, we’ll see.”

Liverpool will return to action on Sunday against West Ham, hoping to recover with a victory that could bring them closer to the title.
