Barcelona Eyes Viktor Gyökeres as Long-Term Successor to Lewandowski
As FC Barcelona undergoes a period of renewal under manager Hansi Flick, attention is turning toward the future of the club’s frontline. Although 36-year-old Robert Lewandowski continues to deliver at an elite level—scoring 23 goals in 24 games this season—Barcelona is beginning to prepare for life after the prolific Polish striker, whose contract runs through 2026 with an optional extension to 2027 based on appearances.
Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyökeres has emerged as the top candidate to take over the reins. The 26-year-old Swedish forward has been in sensational form since joining from Coventry City in 2023, scoring 40 goals in 41 matches this season, including a standout hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League. Known for his powerful presence, link-up play, and goal-scoring instincts, Gyökeres fits the mold of a modern striker capable of leading Barcelona’s attack.
Sporting director Deco has praised Gyökeres’ development, viewing him as Lewandowski’s natural heir. Barcelona is reportedly considering a summer 2025 transfer, potentially for around €70 million, with plans to loan him back to Sporting CP for a season—giving Lewandowski one more year as the main man while ensuring a smooth transition.
The decision hinges on Lewandowski’s form and future. The striker is on pace to trigger a contract extension and may be offered a new deal running to 2027. Should he maintain this level, Barcelona could delay Gyökeres’ arrival or adopt a shared role between the two.
However, acquiring Gyökeres won’t be easy. His release clause sits at €100 million, though Sporting may negotiate for less—especially if Barcelona includes a player like Vitor Roque in the deal. Roque, valued at €25 million, has struggled for game time at Camp Nou and could sweeten the offer.
Barcelona’s financial challenges remain a hurdle. While the club is gaining some flexibility under La Liga’s financial rules, it must still act carefully. A planned major investment in January 2025 could, however, boost their transfer budget.
Competition for Gyökeres is intense. Manchester United, now led by his former coach Rúben Amorim, are keen, along with Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Arsenal, and Atlético Madrid. While Gyökeres is reportedly open to a Barcelona move, he may favor clubs offering immediate starting roles.
Barcelona is also exploring alternatives, including Newcastle’s Alexander Isak and Lille’s Jonathan David. Big-name options like Haaland, Núñez, and Osimhen are also admired but are considered less realistic.
In the short term, Barcelona could lean on Pau Víctor for depth. However, Gyökeres remains the ideal long-term signing—one that blends youth, quality, and star power to lead the next chapter at Camp Nou.
As the 2025 transfer window approaches, Barcelona faces a complex puzzle—balancing current success with future planning, financial constraints, and stiff competition. But if they can pull it off, Viktor Gyökeres may well become the new face of Barcelona’s attack.
