Antonio Rudiger Sent Message From German FA as He Faces Huge Ban

Antonio Rüdiger Potentially Facing Major Suspension Following Copa del Rey Final Incident

Antonio Rüdiger is facing serious consequences after being sent off during the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona. Although he had already been substituted during extra time, the Real Madrid defender received a red card for throwing an object at referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea—an act that could result in a lengthy suspension.

Amid lingering frustration around the referee’s appointment—an issue that had reportedly prompted Real Madrid to consider withdrawing from the final—Rüdiger’s reaction drew sharp criticism. Among the voices speaking out was Rudi Völler, sporting director of the German FA, who called the behavior “unacceptable.”

> “Toni is a great player, but as a national team player, he must also show class in his behaviour. He rightly demands respect for himself, but he must extend that same respect to others without exception. In this case, he and some teammates allowed themselves to be swept up by the extremely heated atmosphere that, inexplicably, often surrounds the club even before kickoff. That is unacceptable, particularly for a German international.”

Spanish disciplinary guidelines indicate that Rüdiger’s actions could be classified as “mild violence” toward a match official—punishable by up to 12 games—or, in the worst case, “assault against a referee,” which could carry a suspension of up to six months. The final decision from the disciplinary committee is still pending.

In the official referee’s match report, it was stated:

> “In the 120th minute, player (22) Rudiger, Antonio, was sent off for the following reason: For throwing an object from the technical area, which missed me. After being shown the red card, he had to be restrained by several members of the coaching staff, displaying an aggressive attitude.”

Rüdiger has since issued a public apology, writing:

> “There’s definitely no excuse for my behaviour last night. I’m very sorry for that. We played a very good game from the 2nd half on – after 111 minutes I was not able to help my team anymore and before the final whistle I made a mistake. Sorry again to the referee and to everyone I disappointed last night.”

The incident leaves Real Madrid in a tough position, as Rüdiger is now set to miss the remainder of their La Liga campaign. With only five matches remaining, his absence could be a significant blow as they try to close the four-point gap to leaders Barcelona.
