Liverpool ‘decide’ Trent Alexander-Arnold replacement as two-man shortlist revealed after Anfield boos

Liverpool have decided on their preferred replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold after compiling a two-man shortlist, it has been reported.

Liverpool Eye Jeremie Frimpong as Alexander-Arnold’s Successor Amid Fan Backlash

Last Monday, Trent Alexander-Arnold officially announced he would leave Liverpool on a free transfer at the end of his contract, which expired the previous month.

During Sunday’s Premier League clash with Arsenal, the England international faced a mixed reception from the Anfield crowd. Some fans booed as he came off the bench in the second half, and a section of supporters at the Kop End jeered him after the 2-2 draw. Midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai publicly urged fans to ease off the criticism, according to Daily Mail’s Lewis Steele.

With Alexander-Arnold on his way out, young right-back Conor Bradley is expected to take on a bigger role next season following another strong showing. However, Bradley currently stands as the only natural right-back in Liverpool’s squad.

Consequently, the club has already begun their search for a replacementβ€”and has reportedly found a prime candidate. According to L’Γ‰quipe, Liverpool have identified Bayer Leverkusen’s Dutch right-back Jeremie Frimpong as their top target for the upcoming transfer window.

Frimpong has been in outstanding form, notching 26 goal contributions over the past two Bundesliga seasons, and adding five assists in just 10 Champions League appearances this campaign. He was a crucial part of Leverkusen’s treble-winning run last season, featuring as a dynamic right wing-back in their historic unbeaten Bundesliga campaign.

However, with Leverkusen failing to defend their title this season and head coach Xabi Alonso expected to leave soon, Frimpong could now be open to a move.

Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reports that Liverpool are already in “advanced talks” with the player’s representatives.

Frimpong’s release clause is reportedly set at a relatively modest figure, ranging between €35 and €40 million.

If the 24-year-old does make the switch to Anfield, it wouldn’t mark his first stint in English or UK football. He began his career in Manchester City’s youth academy before moving to Scottish powerhouse Celtic.

During Erik ten Hag’s tenure, Frimpong was frequently linked with a potential move to Manchester United, though a deal never came to fruition.
