Taiwo Awoniyi: our prayers are with Nottingham Forest striker after worrying news

Taiwo Awoniyi in Induced Coma Following Emergency Surgery After On-Field Collision

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has been placed in an induced coma after undergoing emergency surgery for a ruptured intestine sustained during Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Leicester City.

The 27-year-old collided with the goalpost during the match and, despite showing signs of serious discomfort, continued playing briefly before later receiving urgent medical attention. Following the game, further assessments by Forest’s medical staff revealed the full extent of his injury, prompting his hospitalization on Monday evening and surgery the following day.

While Awoniyi’s condition is not believed to be life-threatening, doctors opted to induce a coma to minimize movement and stabilize his heart rate during the recovery process. The club has reported that he is “recovering well so far.”

The incident has sparked internal criticism within Nottingham Forest. Owner Evangelos Marinakis was seen speaking with manager Nuno Espírito Santo after the match, reportedly out of concern regarding the decision to allow Awoniyi to continue playing. The club later issued a statement clarifying there was no conflict between staff, but emphasized a collective frustration that the striker wasn’t immediately removed from play.
