Liverpool secures £60m signing of Bayer Leverkusen star, who is set to don iconic squad number.

Florian Wirtz Drawing Major Transfer Interest as Liverpool Take the Lead

Florian Wirtz, the standout star from Bayer Leverkusen, has become one of the hottest prospects in European football, with strong interest coming from Liverpool, Manchester City, and Bayern Munich.

The 22-year-old German international has delivered a phenomenal season, tallying 16 goals and 15 assists in 44 matches for the Bundesliga champions.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is said to be in direct contact with Wirtz, aiming to convince the midfielder to join him in the Premier League this summer.

Liverpool in Pole Position as Bayern Face Financial Hurdles

Although Bayern Munich are eager to land Wirtz, financial limitations are reportedly holding them back. According to Anfield Watch, the German giants may need to sell key players—possibly including Kingsley Coman or Sacha Boey—to afford Wirtz’s projected €150 million fee.

Liverpool, on the other hand, are in a much stronger financial position and wouldn’t need to sell anyone to complete the signing. This gives them a significant edge in what could be a competitive bidding war.

Bundesliga expert Ronan Murphy told Anfield Watch, “There are many logical reasons for Wirtz to consider Bayern, but the financial reality may prevent that move. Liverpool, however, are in a place to push forward without making sales—which clearly puts them in a better spot.”

Slot Eyeing Creative Reinforcement in Midfield

Despite a cautious approach in recent transfer windows—where Federico Chiesa was the only marquee signing last summer—Liverpool, under Arne Slot, have had a promising season.

Securing Wirtz would represent a major enhancement to the team’s midfield. His dual threat as both a goal-scorer and playmaker could bring a new creative spark to the side, something currently lacking beyond Mohamed Salah. If completed, the move could be a game-changer for the Reds.
