Liverpool secures £60m signing of Bayer Leverkusen star, who is set to don iconic squad number.

Florian Wirtz Attracting Major Interest as Liverpool Pull Ahead in Transfer Race

Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz has become one of Europe’s hottest transfer targets, with Liverpool, Manchester City, and Bayern Munich all vying for his signature.

The 22-year-old German international has enjoyed a standout season, tallying 16 goals and 15 assists in 44 appearances for the Bundesliga champions.

City boss Pep Guardiola is reportedly already in touch with Wirtz, trying to lure him to the Premier League. However, Liverpool are believed to be leading the race.

Liverpool Poised to Capitalize on Bayern’s Budget Issues

Although Bayern Munich are eager to bring Wirtz to the Allianz Arena, financial constraints could hinder their chances. Reports suggest Bayern would need to sell key players—like Kingsley Coman or Sacha Boey—to meet Wirtz’s estimated €150 million valuation.

Liverpool, meanwhile, enjoy a more stable financial position. Unlike Bayern, they wouldn’t need to offload talent to fund a move—an advantage that could prove decisive.

“There are lots of reasons Wirtz could choose Bayern,” Bundesliga analyst Ronan Murphy told Anfield Watch. “But financially, Liverpool have the upper hand.”

Wirtz Could Be the Creative Spark Arne Slot Needs

Despite operating with financial discipline in recent windows—landing Federico Chiesa last summer on a budget-friendly deal—Arne Slot has guided Liverpool to a strong campaign.

Adding Wirtz would give Slot a much-needed creative engine in midfield. His goal contributions and playmaking skills could ease the attacking burden on Mohamed Salah and provide Liverpool with a game-changing presence in the center of the park.
