Reports indicate that Liverpool is set to strengthen their attack by acquiring Juventus winger Federico Chiesa for around £13 million. However, Ryan Lowe, a former Preston North End manager and Liverpool fan, argues that the club would have been better off targeting Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon instead.
Liverpool has struggled to bolster their squad this season, with key targets Martin Zubimendi and Gordon opting to stay with their current teams. Although Chiesa’s addition offers a solid backup for Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz, Lowe believes Liverpool should have pursued Gordon, who might have been a more promising starter rather than settling for Chiesa, who is expected to be a reserve.
Lowe remarked, “I would have spent the money on Anthony Gordon. Although Newcastle fans may disagree, Gordon has the potential to be a starter. Liverpool needs more than just backup players; they need to improve their starting lineup.”
Chiesa, a versatile right winger, can also play on the left or as a central forward. However, his recent performance has been affected by recurring injuries following a significant knee injury in 2022. Over four seasons with Juventus, he made 131 appearances, scoring 32 goals and providing 23 assists.
In other news, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher discussed the club’s progress under new manager Arne Slot, highlighting Liverpool’s successful start to the Slot era with consecutive wins against Ipswich Town and Brentford, both featuring clean sheets.
The most significant shift under Slot’s management is his playing style, which differs from his predecessor Jurgen Klopp’s approach. Unlike Klopp’s high-intensity, fast-paced football, Slot’s team seems more deliberate and controlled with the ball, focusing on methodically building their attacks.
Carragher thinks this new approach will help Liverpool manage games more efficiently. However, he also notes that Slot’s style might not be as exciting to watch as Klopp’s energetic and dynamic tactics.
