Hansi Flick has decided to exclude one of the major names from the starting lineup, preferring to keep him on the bench next season

With Hansi Flick remaining in charge at Barcelona, a new chapter is beginning at Camp Nou. Known for his structured tactics and balanced attacking style, the German coach is not settling for continuity—he plans to overhaul the squad’s starting lineup in line with his vision for a more competitive team across all competitions next season.

Flick has conducted a thorough evaluation of the squad, identifying key positions that need change. As part of his strategic rebuild, he’s reportedly set to sideline a major figure—goalkeeper André ter Stegen. According to Mundo Deportivo, Flick has reached an agreement with the club’s hierarchy to promote incoming signing Juan Garcia from Espanyol to the starting goalkeeper role.

Sources close to the situation suggest that Ter Stegen will struggle to maintain his place under Flick, marking a potential end to his time as Barcelona’s No. 1. The club is now open to the possibility of his departure—especially as Ter Stegen aims to become Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper for the 2026 World Cup, having long played second fiddle to Manuel Neuer.

This decision aligns with Barcelona’s broader strategy of rejuvenating the squad. Under President Joan Laporta, the club has seen the exits of several long-time players such as Lionel Messi, Gerard Piqué, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and Sergi Roberto. Ter Stegen remains the final link to the side that suffered the infamous 8–2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the 2020 Champions League.

Despite this shift, it’s notable that Ter Stegen is still under contract with the club until 2028.
