Liverpool manager Arne Slot has now delivered a transfer update ahead of the transfer deadline later today.
The Dutch manager has stated that he does not anticipate any new arrivals today, though Liverpool might make a move if a promising opportunity arises later. With the summer transfer window closing today, Liverpool has added Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia and Federico Chiesa from Juventus. While both players could enhance the team in the future, the overall transfer period has been lackluster.
Liverpool needed to address significant weaknesses this summer but has fallen short. The departure of Joel Matip highlighted the need for a backup central defender, and a quality defensive midfielder was also required. Last season, Alexis Mac Allister was used in a defensive role, but he’s not well-suited for that position. A specialist defensive midfielder was needed to allow Mac Allister and others to play to their strengths and bolster defensive stability.
So far, Liverpool has not addressed these needs, and it remains to be seen if they will make any late moves to resolve these issues. Additionally, securing a backup central defender would have been beneficial, given the injury-prone nature of players like Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez.
As Liverpool aims for major trophies this season, it will be interesting to see if they can succeed despite the lack of significant transfer activity this summer.
