Clément Lenglet Departs Barcelona, Joins Atlético Madrid on Permanent Deal
As Hansi Flick begins his second season at the helm of FC Barcelona, the club is undergoing a major squad reshaping aimed at building a more balanced and effective team. Part of this process involves parting ways with players no longer seen as essential to the project. One of the first significant moves is the official termination of Clément Lenglet’s contract.
Barcelona and the French defender mutually agreed to end his contract, paving the way for Lenglet to join Atlético Madrid on a permanent basis. The Madrid-based club confirmed via its official “X” account that Lenglet has signed a new deal running until the summer of 2028.
Lenglet spent last season on loan at Atlético, making 34 appearances and contributing three goals and two assists—performances that convinced the club’s management to secure his services long-term.
Originally signed by Barcelona from Sevilla in 2018, Lenglet made 160 appearances in all competitions for the Catalan giants, scoring seven goals and winning several trophies, including La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup.
His exit marks the latest chapter in Barcelona’s broader efforts to revamp the squad. With Flick aiming to re-establish the club as a serious contender both in Spain and across Europe, offloading players outside the current tactical vision is seen as essential to making room for new signings aligned with this renewed ambition.
