Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the future of Martin Zubimendi amid reports that Real Madrid could ‘hijack’ Arsenal’s move for the Real Sociedad midfielder.

Zubimendi to Arsenal: Romano Confirms Deal Despite Real Madrid Interest

Arsenalโ€™s pursuit of Martin Zubimendi appears to be nearing completion, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano offering a major update amid reports that Real Madrid could make a late move.

Zubimendi, 26, has been on Arsenalโ€™s radar since the January transfer window, with Mikel Arteta targeting the Real Sociedad midfielder to reinforce his squad. The Spaniard has a ยฃ51 million release clause, which Arsenal are reportedly ready to activate.

While Zubimendi rejected a Liverpool offer last summer to remain in Spain, new developments suggest a change of heart. Spanish outlet AS recently claimed that Real Madridโ€”now under Xabi Alonsoโ€”have identified Zubimendi as a top midfield target. Alonso, who coached Zubimendi during his time with Sociedad B, is reportedly pushing for a reunion, with Madrid said to be planning a final attempt to secure the player.

Zubimendi has openly admired Alonso in the past, calling him his “idol,” which some believe could sway his decision.

However, Fabrizio Romano offered clarity in a recent update on his YouTube channel. According to him, despite Madrid’s interest, Zubimendi has already fully agreed to join Arsenal.

โ€œMy understanding is that Martin Zubimendi has already accepted everything Arsenal offered,โ€ Romano said. โ€œThereโ€™s been a full agreement for some time now. He spoke with Mikel Arteta and wanted to respect Real Sociedad by waiting until the season ended.โ€

Romano confirmed that documents between Arsenal and Sociedad have already been exchanged, and the only steps remaining are Zubimendiโ€™s medical, official signing, and unveiling.

He did add a note of caution: โ€œIn football, anything can happenโ€”even at the last minuteโ€”but Arsenal are confident he will be theirs this summer.โ€

Zubimendi recently played a pivotal role in Spainโ€™s Euro 2024 triumph, adding further excitement around his potential impact at the Emirates. His arrival, along with Arsenalโ€™s readiness to meet his release clause, signals another major step in Artetaโ€™s squad rebuild.
