Andy Robertson linked with shock move away from Liverpool as Fabrizio Romano drops transfer bombshell

Trent Alexander-Arnold could face former Liverpool teammate Andy Robertson in a swift reunion on the pitch after completing his move to Real Madrid.

Alexander-Arnold Joins Real Madrid — And He Might Not Be the Only One Leaving Liverpool

Trent Alexander-Arnold was officially unveiled as a Real Madrid player this week, becoming the club’s second signing of the summer. Impressively, the England international addressed fans in Spanish during his presentation.

He completed his move just in time to participate in the upcoming Club World Cup in the United States, with Real Madrid paying Liverpool £8.4 million to ensure he’s eligible for the tournament, which kicks off this Saturday.

Though some fans reacted with frustration, Alexander-Arnold’s departure from his boyhood club was marked by an emotional farewell, ending a two-decade-long journey at Anfield and leaving behind close teammates and supporters.

Now, another Liverpool departure may be on the horizon.

Reports suggest that Andy Robertson could also be headed to the Spanish capital—though not to join Real Madrid. According to Fabrizio Romano, Atletico Madrid hold a strong interest in the Scotland captain, who is said to be “highly appreciated internally” at the club.

In fact, Robertson is now considered Atletico’s top target for the left-back position, reportedly ahead of AC Milan’s Theo Hernandez on their shortlist.

With Alexander-Arnold and Robertson forming a legendary full-back duo at Liverpool—and a close friendship off the pitch—the possibility of both playing in Madrid, albeit for rival clubs, marks the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter in La Liga.

Robertson Reflects on Alexander-Arnold’s Exit Amid Transfer Speculation of His Own

While Liverpool continue their summer overhaul with the expected signing of Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez, Italian sources have acknowledged that bringing Andy Robertson to Atletico Madrid will be “not an easy” deal to pull off.

Robertson, who joined Liverpool from Hull City for £8 million in 2017, has since become a club legend, amassing 342 appearances and winning two Premier League titles, the Champions League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup.

Under Jurgen Klopp, Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold helped redefine the role of the modern full-back—bringing creativity, assists, and goals from wide defensive positions.

Following Alexander-Arnold’s emotional departure, Robertson paid a heartfelt tribute to his long-time teammate, acknowledging the impact he had both on and off the pitch.

“He kept pushing me during our best years, and I’m grateful for that,” Robertson told Sky Sports. “His legacy at the club speaks for itself—the trophies, the iconic moments, they’ll never be forgotten.”

Speaking about the criticism Alexander-Arnold received from some supporters, Robertson added:
“It’s clearly an emotional decision, and not an easy one. He’s made his choice, and while it’s never nice to see a friend get booed, we can’t control how fans react.”

“What I can say is I’m incredibly proud of everything he’s done for Liverpool. I love him as both a friend and a player. He’s one of my best friends in football, and he will be missed.
