Report: Liverpool could replace Quansah with £45m colossus who’d instantly cancel out one problem

It feels like almost every day this summer, a Liverpool defender is linked with a move away from the club.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has already departed, Andy Robertson is said to have agreed personal terms with Atlético Madrid, and Ibrahima Konaté’s future is in doubt with just a year left on his contract.

Another defender making headlines is Jarell Quansah. According to Fabrizio Romano, the 22‑year‑old is open to a move to Bayer Leverkusen, with talks reportedly underway between the two clubs about a potential deal that would reunite him with Erik ten Hag.

Meanwhile, recent reports indicate that Liverpool have a replacement in mind if Quansah leaves for the Bundesliga.

Liverpool considering Guehi as a possible Quansah replacement
According to DAVEOCKOP, Marc Guehi is a top target for FSG if the Reds decide to sell the No. 78. The club is said to have been in contact with the Crystal Palace defender’s representatives as early as March.

Guehi, 24, is approaching the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park, making the Eagles more open to negotiations. An offer in the range of £40–45 million could be enough to secure the England international, rather than risk losing him for nothing in 2026 if no new agreement is reached.

Guehi could immediately solve Liverpool’s homegrown quota concerns
If Liverpool decide to sell Jarell Quansah this summer and sign Marc Guehi as his replacement, it would instantly address a potential issue arising from Quansah’s departure.

With Trent Alexander-Arnold and Caoimhin Kelleher already gone, and Conor Bradley, Harvey Elliott, and Quansah now over the age threshold for under-21 classification, the Reds are walking a fine line when it comes to meeting their homegrown quota for domestic and European squads (according to The Athletic).

Although the arrival of Jeremie Frimpong has helped (given his long stint in Manchester City’s academy), other targets like Florian Wirtz or Milos Kerkez would not qualify as U21 due to being just over the 1st of January 2004 cut‑off date — the latter by only two months.

If Quansah is sold and Guehi arrives, Liverpool would instantly resolve that problem. The Crystal Palace defender’s precarious contract situation could also work to the Reds’ advantage. Last summer, the Eagles rejected a £70m bid for Guehi from Newcastle (via CaughtOffside), but with only 12 months left on his deal, their asking price is thought to have dropped significantly.

Guehi, with 132 Premier League appearances, is entering the prime of his career and is recognised for his leadership on the pitch, having captained Oliver Glasner’s side to an FA Cup win a month ago.

If Liverpool were to receive roughly £40m for Quansah (according to The Athletic), that money could be reinvested to secure Guehi, making an offer that might now be enough to tempt Palace to sell.
