Bayern Munich ‘join race’ to sign Liverpool star Arne Slot is desperate to keep after missing out on Florian Wirtz transfer

The Premier League champions aren’t hanging around when it comes to strengthening their hand for next season’s title defence.

Liverpool sealed their second Premier League title of the modern era and wasted no time reinforcing their squad, starting with right-back Jeremie Frimpong, who’ll offer Arne Slot more tactical options following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s turbulent exit.

With the imminent signing of Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez also on the horizon, the Reds then shattered their transfer record to land German playmaker Florian Wirtz in a deal that could reach ÂŁ116m with add-ons.

Typically, a top German talent who breaks Bayern Munich’s domestic dominance — as Wirtz did under Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen last season — would eventually switch to the Bavarian giants. Bayern were widely linked with Wirtz, but his decision to move to England has left them searching for alternative targets even as they begin their Club World Cup campaign in the United States.

According to Liverpool.com, Bayern have now set their sights on Anfield as they look to bolster their attack with one of Liverpool’s key wingers.

Both Barcelona and Bayern — as well as Slot — have Luis Diaz on their radar alongside teammate Cody Gakpo, with reports from Matt Addison suggesting that the German champions view Diaz as a top priority.

Although Diaz has indicated that he’d prefer to stay at Anfield if a new contract can be agreed — his current deal expires in two years — Slot is also keen to keep him in Merseyside.

Bayern had also pursued Barcelona-bound Nico Williams and Real Madrid’s Rodrygo, but after those pursuits went cold, they’ve turned their attention to Merseyside — as well as PSG’s Bradley Barcola and Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens.

With so many names on their wishlist, Bayern’s recruitment team won’t have much downtime during the Club World Cup.

Vincent Kompany’s side kicked off the tournament with a 10-0 demolition of semi-professionals Auckland City before a tighter win over Boca Juniors.

Next up is Tuesday’s clash with Benfica, which will determine who finishes top of the group. The Portuguese club must avoid defeat or they’ll be left relying on Auckland to limit the damage against Boca to have any chance of progressing.
