Former Barcelona director Freixa: ‘Weโ€™ll set up donation tables to sign Nico Williams’

Toni Freixa Slams โ€œSystematic Campaignโ€ Against Barcelona Amid Transfer Criticism

Former Barcelona director Toni Freixa has come out swinging in defense of the club, claiming there is an orchestrated effort to damage its reputationโ€”especially during transfer windows. Speaking on El Partidazo de COPE, Freixa took aim at the media, accusing them of fueling a misleading narrative.

โ€œThe signings must be done by a mentalist, right?โ€ he said sarcastically. โ€œNo conversations, no meetings, no leaksโ€”just focus and boom, the deal is done. Tell me, Juanma, which transfer works like that? Journalists know everything. I donโ€™t get the outrage.โ€

According to Freixa, the criticism of Barcelonaโ€™s transfer dealings is part of a broader, intentional smear campaign:

โ€œThereโ€™s a narrative โ€” one designed to slander and discredit Barรงa at every opportunity.โ€

When asked about the clubโ€™s rumored pursuit of Athletic Club winger Nico Williams, Freixa responded with biting irony:

โ€œAre we interested in Nico Williams? If we can raise the fundsโ€ฆ I think weโ€™ve set up donation boxes around Barcelona so people can drop in some coins to help.โ€

Despite financial concerns, Freixa insisted the player himself is eager to join:

โ€œThere is genuine interest โ€” not just from Barรงa, but especially from Nico. His agent contacted the club and made it clear that wearing the Barรงa shirt is his dream.โ€

He also criticized the inconsistent media narrative:

โ€œOnce we activate the release clause, they’ll say we donโ€™t meet the 1:1 rule. Then, once heโ€™s registered, the story will shift again โ€” maybe we got preferential treatment. It never ends.โ€

Freixa suggested that if La Liga tries to block a transfer โ€” as seen in past cases like Dani Olmo or Pau Victor โ€” legal action would again be appropriate:

โ€œIf La Liga refuses to register a player, in a country governed by law, we turn to the administrative courts. The law is applied, and Barรงa is granted its rights.โ€

He ended with a pointed observation:

โ€œThis anti-Barรงa narrative wonโ€™t stop. Thatโ€™s the real problem here.โ€
