Liverpool: Ornstein Shares Firm Update on Isak as Newcastle Eye Ekitike Amid Rival Interest
Newcastle United are reportedly looking to hijack Liverpool’s transfer plans, while journalist David Ornstein has provided clarity on Alexander Isak’s future.
So far this summer, Newcastle’s only signing has been young winger Antonito Cordero from Malaga on a free transfer. However, the club is actively working on deals for James Trafford and Anthony Elanga, who could soon join as significant new additions.
Following these, Newcastle is expected to continue strengthening their squad and is reportedly in the market for a new striker. Despite already having a top-tier forward in Alexander Isak—who scored 27 goals in the 2024/25 season—they need more depth up front, especially with the decision not to offer veteran Callum Wilson a new contract.
This has led Newcastle to revive their interest in Hugo Ekitike, a player they previously failed to sign. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the club has rejoined the race for the Eintracht Frankfurt striker, alongside Liverpool, Chelsea, and other top clubs.
“Hugo Ekitike continues to draw Premier League interest, with Newcastle now pursuing the striker,” Romano posted on social media, adding that while clubs from Saudi Arabia have made inquiries, Ekitike prefers a move within Europe.
Despite Newcastle’s interest in another forward, David Ornstein of The Athletic has dismissed speculation that this means Isak is on his way out. Speaking on the Sky Sports Back Pages Today podcast, Ornstein said:
“Selling Alexander Isak is not something Newcastle are considering. They want to keep him and ideally get him to extend his contract. Many clubs, including Liverpool and previously Arsenal, admire him. But Newcastle aren’t planning to let him go—and even if they did, the asking price would be astronomical.”
