Former Liverpool defender Joel Matip could be set to make an unexpected return to the Premier League as one club is reportedly interested in the centre back.
After eight years at Liverpool, Matip departed the club at the end of last season when his contract expired.
The Cameroonian was a crucial figure under former manager Jurgen Klopp, who often praised Matip for his footballing skills and character.
Now, four months after leaving Liverpool, Matip might be set to return to the Premier League as West Ham United considers signing the 33-year-old to bolster their defense.
According to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth, Matip is one of two center-backs being evaluated by West Ham. The club is looking at free agents to fill the void left by Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd, who both departed last week.
Zouma, who joined West Ham three years ago and made 103 appearances, has been loaned to Saudi Pro League club Al-Oroubah for the 2024/25 season. Meanwhile, Aguerd, who played 28 games last season, has been loaned to La Liga side Real Sociedad.
Given the departure of these key defenders, adding a seasoned Premier League player like Matip to play alongside new defensive recruits Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Max Kilman, and Jean-Clair Todibo would be a strategic move.
Matip made over 200 appearances for Liverpool, winning the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, and two Carabao Cups during his tenure.
At the end of last season, before both he and Matip departed Liverpool, Klopp expressed high admiration for the defender.
“In all my years in football, I’m not sure I’ve met many players more beloved than Joel Matip. It’s hard to say anything negative about him,” Klopp remarked.
In another press conference, he added, “Have you ever seen a better free transfer than Joel Matip? He’s incredibly funny and a fantastic person. Any club that signs him will be very fortunate. He’s world-class and exceptionally humble.”
